Energy supplier, Tomato Energy, has gone bust. If you’re one of the provider’s eight thousand businesses or fifteen thousand household customers, here’s everything you need to know.
If you have recently searched “Has Tomato Energy gone bust?” or “Is Tomato Energy under investigation?”, you’re not alone. The renewable energy provider has now confirmed the supplier has stopped trading, leaving thousands of customers wondering what happens to their tariff, credit balance or direct debit.
The important part is what you do next. Your electricity will stay on, and your account will be transferred to a new supplier, but there are steps you should take immediately to stay in control and avoid being moved onto a more expensive tariff.
Keep reading for the actions that protect your business and how to switch to a better contract once the transfer is complete.

Tomato Energy was a small independent supplier based in Basingstoke, serving around 15,300 households and 8,400 businesses.
It promoted transparent pricing and offered solar export tariffs to customers who generated their own energy. After being placed under investigation by Ofgem earlier in 2025, the business has now ceased trading.
Ofgem has appointed British Gas as the Supplier of Last Resort. This means British Gas will now take over all Tomato Energy accounts. The transfer has already begun, and British Gas has confirmed that:
British Gas will contact all former Tomato Energy customers once your new account is set up. You don’t need to contact them at this stage.
There are three quick actions:
Once the transfer is complete, you’re free to shop around and move to a more favourable business or domestic tariff.
British Gas will initially place customers on their standard tariff. Standard rates are usually higher than fixed-term business contracts. Once British Gas contacts you, you will be free to look at better deals and switch with no exit fees.
For business customers, this moment matters. Many companies end up with default rates and pay far more than necessary. Reviewing the tariff as soon as the transfer finishes can save a significant amount.
If you exported energy through Tomato Energy, unfortunately, that part of your agreement won’t transfer automatically. Once your account moves to British Gas, you’ll need to set up a new export agreement separately.
Once the new supplier contacts you, you’re free to look for a new tariff. Comparing properly makes the biggest difference to price. To secure a better business electricity contract:
Most businesses overpay because they don’t review their tariff on time. Don’t be one of them. This is your opportunity to take control.
When British Gas confirms your new account, that is the time to compare. To secure the best possible business electricity contract, you’ll need your usage information, meter reads and a copy of your latest bill.
Check the unit rate, standing charge and contract length so that you’re comparing like for like. Many businesses roll onto default out-of-contract rates simply because they do not review their tariff in time. This is your opportunity to take control of your domestic energy or business energy bill.
